London theatre legend and singer, Michael Ball has agreed a contract extension in the London Shaftsbury Theatre production, Hairspray. Ball, a prominent star of Broadway and West End theatre for over two decades, will continue playing the flamboyant female role of Edna Turnblad until October 2008.
Hairspray originally opened on Broadway back in August 2002 at the Neil Simon Theatre where it continues to run to this day. Based on a 1988 movie, the Broadway production of Hairspray has won numerous awards including the Tony Award for Best Musical, and was again adapted for film in 2007 when a new motion picture, starring John Travolta as Edna was made based on the theatre musical.
Hairspray opened at the Shaftsbury Theatre, London on 30th October 2007. Michael Ball, who was originally contracted to play Edna in the London show for 6 months, stars along side numerous celebrities including hilarious comic Mel Smith, BBC’s reality talent show ‘Any Dream Will Do’ runner up, Ben Ellis and Coronation Street’s Tracie Bennett.
The London theatre production of Hairspray was created by the original Broadway production team, with Jack O’Brien at the helm, music by Marc Shaiman and choreography by Jerry Mitchell.
Set in Baltimore USA in the 60’s, Hairspray follows Tracy Turnblad, an overweight teenager with a passion for dancing as she embarks on her quest to fulfil her dream of fame and fortune. The unlikely star, desperate to impress her mother, Edna Turnblad, wins a place on a local television dance show called ‘The Corny Collins Show’, which sees the big girl with big ‘Beehive’ hair and a big heart change from teenage ‘wannabe’ to teenage celebrity in one fell swoop! However, as with everything in life, Tracy wants more and sets her sights on Link Larkin, her childhood heartthrob. Only the show’s numero uno star Amber Von Tussle stands in the way of her ultimate dream!
Hairspray really is BIG on music, dance, humour and of course hair! The show is fantastic fun and you can guarantee a grin from ear to ear when you leave the Shaftsbury Theatre having watched this highly entertaining production.
