Nichola Treherne’s revival of
Joseph is an instant success and well deserving too. Off the back of the television competition Any Dream Will Do that saw Lee Mead win the title role, it was always going to be an initial sell out. What I was pleased to see (and hear) was Mead’s ability to portray the role truthfully with plenty of presence, a bucketful of charm and the ability to look very dashing in a loin cloth. With his curly hair and cute looks, he appeals to all ages and genders and the young, especially love him!
Mead can sometimes pull off a rich, melodic sound to his voice which is really pleasing and reminds me a little of the young Michael Ball. Overall he certainly hasn’t the strongest voice in the world but he nevertheless fulfils his requirements, pouring body and soul into the regenerated role of Joseph for a new generation.
This was the earliest collaboration between the brilliant Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice machine and at times, it does seem a little old fashioned. But with such a redeeming lead man and with the excellent Dean Collinson as the Pharaoh, (Elivis style) Joseph is set to be a favourite in the West End for some time. There is the fabulous ‘Any Dream Will Do’ and ‘Close Every Door’ to sing along to and one or two new songs to enjoy; it is proof that the Lloyd-Webber and Rice team are unassailable in their ability to write those catchy tunes that once heard, are never forgotten.

Joseph theatre tickets. This is a show that the really young can enjoy; there is a lot to see with a charming chorus of enthusiastic children and overall stunning costumes and set. And the cacophony of musical styles really keeps the pace going and your interest alive.
