| Mamma Mia at the Prince of Wales
Booking up to 28 June 2008
Go to see Phyllida Lloyd’s Mamma Mia! and you will undoubtedly have a seriously fun night out with lots of laughs, toe tapping and a bit of a sing a long too.
The storyline is of a young girl arranging her wedding on a Greek Island where her mum, a child of the 70’s is a bar owner. The mother and daughter relationship is often quite touching but it is the arrival of the mum’s old friends that add sparkle and laughter to the proceedings. The main plot is the mystery of the missing father and Sophie’s secret plan to bring 3 possible candidates to the Island in time for one of them (which one?) to walk her down the aisle.
Catherine Johnson wrote this around some of Abba’s best loved tunes, ‘Dancing Queen’, Take a Chance on Me’, ‘Waterloo’, ‘Fernando’ and ‘Mamma Mia!’ of course. The scenes are scripted around the song titles and this leads to unlikely dialogue with corny cues expertly delivered, sometimes towards the audience almost in apology at the unlikely way of bringing in yet another Abba song. The whole thing is shameless and bordering on slapstick but Mamma Mia! doesn’t pretend to be anything more. It is sometimes hilarious, sometimes a little sad but always thoroughly entertaining.
Mamma Mia! is highly recommended and once you’ve seen it, you will want to go again.
