Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre
Now booking up to 27 September 2008
Phantom of the Opera has well and truly stood the test of time, becoming the longest running show in the history of Her Majesty’s theatre. It opened in 1986 to rave reviews with Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford in the leading role and the love affair with the public continues today. If you haven’t already done so, please book your theatre tickets now and if you have seen it, go and see it again. There is so much to enjoy, the stunning set and the even more stunning musical score by the indubitable Andrew Lloyd-Webber.
Phantom of the Opera is based on the novel Le Fantome by Gaston Leroux and is set in Paris in 1910. It is a sinister, tragic-romantic epic telling the story of the disfigured Phantom and his love for the chorus girl Christine. The action takes place in the Paris Opera house and is often intensely dark; action fraught with passion and desire, murder and sacrifice.
Theatre ticket sales are estimated at over £1.6 billion with audiences of over 70 million people. If you only ever go to see one show in the West End, it must be Phantom of the Opera. Many believe the score behind this musical is Lloyd-Webbers best, with dramatic and moving storytelling entangled throughout the songs and the lyrics of Richard Stilgo and Charles Hart. It is a captivating, tense and sometimes dark musical journey.
The costumes, set and scenery all add to the highly charged action with the by now famous swinging chandelier scene. Audiences in the first few rows of the stalls will be captivated by the sight of the Phantom dangling, seemingly perilously, above their heads. And compounding the complete ostracism of the tragic Phantom, we are the elite voyeurs watching him high in the rafters, unseen and unwanted by society. Cheaper seats don’t offer the extensive view that the Phantom of the Opera deserves and for this reason, I would recommend buying higher price theatre tickets. Don’t miss out on any of it!
The Phantom of the Opera is a masterpiece of grand magnitude and I predict it will run and run. So book your london theatre tickets now so you can say you have seen it and then…go and see it again!
