Musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Charles Hart; directed by Harold Prince. Based on the novel Le Fantome de I'Opera by Gaston Leroux.
This spectacular and haunting musical uses some of the most lavish sets, costumes and special effects ever created for the stage.
Set in the Paris Opera House during the 19th century, the Phantom of the Opera is facially disfigured and haunts and terrorises the building’s occupants. Obsessed with the young and beautiful soprano Christine, he spirits her away under the theatre where he teaches her to sing “like an angel”. Christine is initially enthralled by the Phantom but she loves another; Raoul.
The musical opened over twenty years ago at Her Majesty’s Theatre and in those two decades the show has been seen by audiences of over 70 million people, in 110 cities, across 20 countries grossing, incredibly, over £1.6 billion.
The show's box office revenues are higher than for any film or stage play in history; including Star Wars, Titanic and ET! The musical has won over fifty major theatre awards, including seven Tonys on Broadway and three Olivier Awards in the West End.
