Rent – Jessie Wallace stars in London Show
Former Eastenders star, Jessie Wallace will make her London Theatre debut when she takes on the starring role in the Duke of York’s theatre production, Rent. Wallace, who shot to fame in the popular BBC soap will play Maureen, in place of Denise Van Outen at the West End theatre from Christmas Eve.
With a string of television drama credits and awards to her name, Wallace joins a high profile cast in the Jonathon Larson musical of Rent at the Duke of York’s theatre, including Siobhan Donaghy from pop act the Sugababes.
Rent is a modern day adaptation of the 1896 Giacomo Puccinis opera La Bohème. The show was originally a hit Broadway production about a group of young New York artists and musicians in the 90’s as they strove to survive and succeed in a harsh, uncertain world under the shadow of drugs and HIV. Including for the first time gay, lesbian and transgender characters, the show brought largely taboo and controversial issues to light. The original Broadway production of Rent won a number of awards, and toured London at the Shaftesbury Theatre in the late 1990’s and later at the Prince of Wales theatre London.
Times have changed since Rent first appeared in Broadway. Directed by William Baker, The Duke of York’s theatre production of Rent is a revamped 21st century version of the show, tackling the wider issues faced by today’s generation.
