The Sound of Music at the London Palladium

The Sound of Music was the last collaboration between Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II and became one of the most successful Oscar-winning film musicals of all time.
It is the story of Maria, the feisty young woman who becomes governess to the von Trapp children, all seven of them. Her spirit and zest for life bring fun and warmth to the rigidity of Captain von Trapp’s household, melting the hearts of the motherless children and ultimately causing the very proper Captain to fall in love with her.
It is a timeless classic and a lot of attention was on leading lady Connie Fisher. After the television competition to find a suitable West End star, was she worthy to fill the shoes of Julie Andrews? It couldn’t be done of course, could it? Answering nearly all of her critics, Connie really does pull it off. She is fresh and vivacious and plays the part with warmth and conviction. She is the tomboy come sexual woman that the original movie depicted so memorably, and she even manages to emulate the same enchanting rapport with her seven charges.
This is a fantastic Jeremy Sams production. From the delightful children and the excellent and dashing Alexander Hanson who plays the Captain, to Lesley Garrett who is the Mother Abbess and the chorus of nuns in the aisles. Then of course, best of all there were the classic renditions of My Favourite Things, Do Re Mi, Edelweiss, Climb Every Mountain, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, The Lonely Goatherd and the celebrated title song The Sound of Music.
Not many people left the auditorium with a dry eye and without an ecstatic smile on their face.
