The Lion King is a masterpiece of Julie Taymor’s making. Her fabulous imagination has bought to the West End stage part of an African plain with its menagerie of animals.
You know the show is going to be spectacular when a giant elephant makes his graceful way down the central aisle. It is an immense show full of amazing costumes, colour and choreography. The human/animal performances are pure genius and so unusual too in that you are aware they are animals controlled by, or performed by humans. A lot of the characters for instance, wear their animal masks on their heads, making no attempt at covering their made up faces. The animals are graceful and truthful in their movements set against Richard Hudson’s innovative set.
This musical won 25 major awards including the 1998 Tony Award for best musical. And you can understand why; the visual feast of The Lion King in itself is enough to keep you enthralled. It has the power to capture the imagination of the children and their parents, such is the genius behind the masks and puppets.
But there is also the fabulous music from Elton John and Tim Rice who together penned three new songs for this stage version. In addition to this, there is the rich African blend of rhythms provided by composer Lebo M.
The Lion King is without doubt one of the most amazing shows in the West End and is well worth the money.
