History of the Garrick Theatre London

The Garrick Theatre, London was opened on 24th April 1889 and was named after David Garrick, a highly influential Shakespearean actor.  The first play performed at the London Theatre was The Profligate by Arthur Wing Pinero.  The London theatre has been a listed grade 2 building since 1960.

Financed by W.S Gilbert, author of the Gilbert and Sullivan comical operas, the building of the Garrick Theatre was hindered by its less than ideal location, with an underground river running directly through the site.  Designed by Walter Emden, the Garrick Theatre originally consisted of 800 seats over 4 levels.  The top gallery is now closed, reducing seating capacity to 656 seats.

The theatre, located on Charring Cross Road, London, was under threat in 1968 when a redevelopment of Covent Garden was proposed by the Greater London Council.  The proposed development would have required demolition of the Garrick Theatre, as well as other theatres located in the vicinity including the Adelphi, Duchess, Lyceum and Vaudeville theatres.  Fortunately, the proposal was eventually abandoned following success of the Save London Theatres Campaign, which was run by the actors union, Equity, and owners of the affected theatres. Modernisation works have been carried out in the theatre, with restoration of the gold leaf auditorium being carried out in 1986, and renovation of the front facade in 1997.

The Garrick Theatre has historically been associated with comedy plays.  Recent productions at the Garrick include Bad Gils, Treats starring Billie Piper and one flew over the Cuckoos nest with Christian
