Restaurant Review
In the early seventies, Maxwell’s Restaurant & Bar became
the first American style diner to hit the streets of
London. Proprietor Brian Stern came to the UK from
Johannesburg in the mid sixties and grew tired waiting for
one to arrive, so decided to create the first authentic
American burger and steak house on these shores. Just over
30 years later, Maxwell’s Restaurants have become the UK’s
biggest independent single restaurant group.
The first Maxwell’s Restaurant & Bar opened in Hampstead in
1972, and proved a great success attracting celebrity
customers including Peter Sellers, Dudley Moore and Peter
Cooke. The first West End premises, and now the flag ship
of Maxwell’s was opened in the heart of Covent Garden in the
early eighties.
Spread over two levels, Maxwell’s at Covent Garden is vast,
with seating for 300 in the upper tier, and a further 150
down the sweeping stairs to the lower tier. Inside,
Maxwell’s is furnished with dark wood surrounds, with a huge
sweeping wooden bar, private booths, and dance area on the
lower level. The lower tier is encircled with a gigantic
mural containing cleverly drawn impressions of historic
celebrities and characters, including Elvis, Winston
Churchill, Mother Theresa and the Pope. Nearly always
buzzing but large enough not to feel overcrowded, the place
is great fun and has a lively, up beat feel about it.
The staff know how to look after the customers and give good
personal advice and assistance on food and drink choices.
The menu contains a mouth watering range of American and
Mexican classics, for which good quality meats and
ingredients are used. The selection of gourmet burgers are
thick and tasty, with the ‘Old Timer’ burger at top billing
as the Maxwell’s signature dish. A full range of other
tasty delights are on offer from buffalo chicken wings,
quesadillas, barbecue ribs, fresh fish and salads to Elvis’s
favourite deserts such as home made waffles, cheesecakes and
ice creams.
The bar serves a full range of beers, wines and champagnes,
but the Maxwell’s speciality is cocktails, with a multitude
on the menu expertly prepared and mixed, from traditional
classics to newly created offerings unique to Maxwell’s.
Right on the doorstep to West End theatreland, Maxwell’s
Covent Garden is a great place to enjoy a fun meal and
possibly a cocktail or two prior to watching your London
show. Take advantage of the great value
theatre tickets and
