Show Overview

Billy Elliot - The Musical is set during the miners strike of the 1980's, highlighting the life and extreme conditions of a young boy living in poverty with his father and older brother. The story of innocence in the face of adversity, Billy Elliot - The Musical is a poignant story that will touch the hearts of everybody.

Billy's father encourages Billy to take up boxing, a typical mans sport. At first Billy goes to the weekly training session just to please his father. It is during one of these sessions he gets to see the ballet class that is being held in the same place. He is enthralled by it and encouraged by the dance instructor, begins to secretly take the ballet classes instead.

Billy is good enough to get an audition at the Royal Ballet School but misses this because his brother gets arrested. During this tumultuous time, the truth gets out and Billys father is furious about his sons feminine passion. He is worried that other people will think him a poof and cannot entertain the idea of Billy ever taking the dancing further.

He eventually sees him dance however and the true caring and loving side of his father is revealed in stark contrast to his rough miners roots. He personally takes Billy to an audition and is there when he gets accepted to the Ballet School.

Billy then moves to London and eventually becomes a famous ballet dancer, watched by his Dad and brother in the finale.

Billy Elliot was originally a film in 2000 and won several prestigious awards, including 'Best Film', 'Best Leading Actor' for Jamie Bell and 'Best Leading Actress' for Julie Walters in the 2001 BAFTAs. The West End musical in now following inthe footsteps of success laid down by the motion picture, having won the 'Best New Musical' Olivier Award.
