Show Overview

The London musical Blood Brothers is a modern play about twins separated at birth. Their mother, Mrs Johnstone, gives one brother (Eddie) away to her employer (Mrs Lyons) because she cannot cope financially, already having lots of other children. She doesn’t want to go through with the separation but has made a promise on the bible. In addition to this, Mrs Lyons convinces Mrs Johnstone that there are superstitious reasons why she cannot retract her promise. This hint of superstition continues throughout the play.

There is an exploration of nature vs. nurture throughout the two acts as Eddie leads a very privileged life whereas Mickey has a troubled childhood. The boys ultimately meet each other and become ‘blood brothers’ after finding out their birthdays are on the same date. They get separated again however as both mothers cannot cope with their friendship for varying reasons.

When they next meet they fail to realise who the other is but each brother sadly wants to be more like the other. The action then forwards to when the boys turn 18 and Eddie goes off to university. Mickey finds out his girlfriend (who Eddie has a crush on) is pregnant and they decide to get married but not before he loses his job in a factory.

The play ends in tragedy after Mickey lands in prison after an armed robbery. He is depressed and in this state, finds out Eddie has had a fling with Linda. Released on parole for good behaviour he tracks Eddie down and threatens him with a gun. Mrs Johnstone arrives and reveals the truth hoping to diffuse the situation. However the Police arrive on the scene and the gun in Mickey’s hand accidentally goes off killing Eddie immediately. The police open fire on Mickey and he too is killed.

The play ends as it begins with both men lying lifeless on the floor surrounded by police and the grieving Mrs Johnstone.

The theatre production has now passed its 20th year and has developed a cult following.
