Show Overview
The original film Brief Encounter was based on a Noel Coward
play 'Still Life' which tells the story of a middle class
housewife, Laura and respectable married doctor Alec. The
two meet and embark upon a friendship that quickly turns
into love and threatens to jeopardise their respective
marriages.
The West End show Brief Encounter is surprising because it
succeeds in the retelling of the original and powerful
liaison between the two main protagonists. The passion is
suppressed by the middle class need for propriety and makes
their sexless affair a tender and heartfelt union.
In befitting decorum they agree to part as they know
eventually, they will get found out. In the final farewell
scene, they sit together in a train café waiting for Alec's
train to take him away from her forever. Unhappily, a friend
of Laura's turns up and joins them. Chatting away happily,
she has no idea of the added pain and anguish she is causing
to the distressed lovers.
The stage version of Brief Encounter is a clever mix of
media using the auditorium as part of the play. Audience
members are shown to their seats with old fashioned ushers
and heavy duty torches. Alec and Laura actually sit and
watch the 'cinema' from the front row and then effortlessly
take to the stage thus entering 'the movie'.
For anyone who likes romance and for anyone who enjoys
seeing something different, this London theatre play comes
highly recommended. Buy London
