Show Overview

Cabaret, the musical production at the Lyric Theatre is set in 1930’s Berlin and opens in the seedy Kit Kat club.

Clifford Bradshaw is a young visiting American looking for inspiration for his novel. He has been recommended by a fellow traveller (Ernst Ludwig) to visit the Kit Kat club. There he meets a dancer called Sally Bowles. She is the girlfriend of the club’s owner, Max who is a jealous man. The next day Sally turns up at Cliff’s apartment and tells him Max has thrown her out. He seeks approval from his landlady Fräulein Schneider and then lets Sally move in. They fall in love and she falls pregnant. At first she wants an abortion but Cliff convinces her he may be the father and so she agrees to have the baby.

The next time Cliff meets Ernst, he agrees to deliver a suitcase for him to a client. He thinks it is going to be easy money.

Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider and Herr Schultz, (a local Jewish fruit seller) fall in love. But Fräulein Schneider has made an enemy in Fräulein Kost who later at their engagement party tells Ernst (now supporting a Nazi armband) that Herr Schultz is a Jew. Fräulein Schneider expresses her concern to Herr Schultz that she has been warned by the Nazi Ernst that their wedding is not a good idea. He assures her it will be okay.

Cliff tells Sally he wants to take her back to America but she doesn’t want to leave. He gets angry because she is ignoring the unrest around her. She doesn’t want it to affect their lives but they argue and she leaves. Back at the Kit Kat club, se performs Cabaret and then hurls her microphone to the floor. When she returns to Cliff’s apartment, she reveals she had the abortion after all. He slaps her and she leaves. Cliff goes to Paris the next morning, alone and heartbroken.
