Show Overview

Dirty Dancing the musical production of the classic film is showing at the Aldwych Theatre.  It is 1963 and the Houseman family are on vacation at Kellerman's, a fictional New York resort. 'Baby' is 17 years old and the first night of her holiday sees a Latin dance demonstration by dance instructor Johnny and his partner Penny. Johnny is a James Dean type rebel and his looks encourage lots of female attention, Baby included. She gets to dance with him 'mambo' after going to the staff quarters. It is close, up personal dancing.

Baby gets to know some of the staff including Penny who she encounters crying. Penny is pregnant and wants an abortion so Baby gets the money from her father, without telling him why. Penny's condition means she cannot perform with Johnny at a scheduled dance and so Baby steps in, getting dance lessons from Johnny. The dance goes reasonably well and the sexual tension between them is mounting. Penny's abortion has been a disaster and she has been left in pain. Baby runs to get her doctor father who administers medical help. He also, wrongly assumes, that Johnny is responsible for Penny's condition. He forbids Baby to see him again.

Baby disobeys however and continues having dance lessons with Johnny. They also embark on a physical relationship.

Johnny is sacked from his job when money goes missing from one of the guests. He was with Baby when the theft happened and Baby confesses all in order to vindicate him. He is still sacked however for having an affair with a guest but her selfless act has quite an impact on him.

He returns to the resort for the final dance of the season and turns the formal ballroom into an exciting evening where everyone is dancing with each other. It is this scene where Baby runs to him to be lifted high onto his outstretched arms.
