Show Overview

Set in 1962 Baltimore, Hairspray, is the Shaftsbury theatre musical production telling the story of slightly plump Tracy Turnblad, who  dreams of becoming a dancer on the Corny Collins show. She hears there are to be auditions and pleads with her mum to let her go. She is refused but later gets permissions from her father. Tracy attends the auditions but doesn't get anywhere because of her size.

Later at school, Tracy's big hairdo earns her a detention. Here she meets a black dancer called Seaweed who teaches her some dance moves.

Corny from the Corny Collins show sees her dance and offers her a place on the show to dance and sing with teen heartthrob Link. Tracy's friend Amber is jealous and later throws a ball at her head during a game of dodgeball.

The friends all gather at Motormouths Maybelle's Record Shop where Tracy encourages everyone to march against the station because black people are not allowed. They are arrested and put in prison.  

Tracy is alone in prison thinking of Link, and her mum and dad Wilbur and Edna, reminisce about their lives and their love for each other. Link eventually comes to rescue Tracy and Seawood rescues her friend Penny from her mother who has tied her up. They go back to Motormouth Maybelle's and devise a plan to help Tracy win the Miss Teenage Hairspray.  

In the spectacular finale, Amber tries to take over by showing off her talents but Tracy  takes to the stage, joined by Link, Penny, Seaweed and Motormouth. She is announced as the winner and declares that finally The Corny Collins Show will be fully integrated.
