Show Overview

The London theatre production Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is based on the biblical book Genesis within the bible. The London show stars Lee Mead*, winner of BBC's Any Dream Will Do.

A narrator begins the tale by telling a group of children about Joseph and his brothers. His brothers are jealous of Joseph and the wonderful coat he was given by his father. When they dream of him one day ruling over them, they decide to sell him as a slave. Then they tell their father that his is dead and show him the coat, torn and smeared with goat's blood.

In Egypt, Joseph is sold to a rich Pharaoh but with his personality and wisdom is  eventually running the Pharaoh's house until the Pharaoh suspects him of having an affair with his wife. Sent to jail he interprets the dreams of fellow inmates and when the Pharaoh hears of this, Joseph is sent for in order to interpret his (the Pharaoh's) dreams of 'seven fat cows', 'seven thin cows', seven healthy ears of corn' and 'seven dead ears of corn'. Joseph does manage to interpret this dream and his prophecy to the Pharaoh prevents starvation throughout the land. Joseph becomes the second most powerful man in Egypt behind the Pharaoh.

Joseph's brothers and father are struggling during this famine predicted by Joseph and go to Egypt to beg for food. Joseph plants a gold cup in the younger brothers bag and then accuses him of stealing. The other brothers beg for his mercy and in happy ever after style, Joseph reveals himself and frees his brother. Brothers and Father are reunited.
