Musical The London theatre production of The Lion King has been a resounding success since it opened in 1999. It is the story of a young lion cub Simba and his place in the ‘Circle of Life’. His own father, Mufasa, King of the Pride Lands in Africa, is killed by the jealous, evil brother Scar. Simba, encouraged by the scheming Scar, flees the scene of his father’s death, believing he is to blame. He is chased by Scar’s ‘henchmen’, the 3 hyenas, Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed. Alone and close to exhaustion, Simba is rescued by Pumbaa the warthog and Timon the meerkat. With these two unlikely companions, Simba learns their philosophy of ‘Hakuna Matata’ and grows into an adult lion. It is sometime later that Nala his childhood friend discovers he is alive and well. She tries to encourage him back to the Pride Lands that have decayed and become unpopulated under Scar’s regime. Simba at first refuses but after a visitation from his father’s old advisor Rafiki and from the ghostly spectacle of his father, he begins his journey home to take up his rightful place as The Lion King. Upon his return Simba and Scar fight and it looks like evil will triumph until Scar cruelly informs Simba that it was he who caused Mufasa’s death. This revelation gives Simba the strength and courage to overthrow Scar who falls from the cliff to his death. Simba as The Lion King, with Nala his queen by his side, take over the Pride Lands and order and harmony is restored.
