Show Overview
The London theatre production of 'Lord of the Rings' is
based on author JRR Tolkien's legendary trilogy, 'The
Fellowship of the Ring', 'The Two Towers' and 'Return of the
King'. The three books were originally available in
one volume of over 1000 pages. It is the story of good
versus evil and the ultimate triumph of light conquering
darkness.
The Lord of the Rings is set in the fantasy land of Middle
Earth and the story begins in the Shire with the hobbit
Frodo and 'the ring'. He is charged with destroying the dark
Lord Sauron. But he has to undergo a fierce test of
physical endurance and mental suffering in order to achieve
this end. On his long journey he is accompanied by his
friends Sam, Pippin, Merry, Aragorn, Boromir, Gimli and
Legolas.
The unlikely band of Hobbits, Elf, Dwarf and man are
assisted by the Wizard Gandalf the Grey who is pitted
against Saruman the Leader of the Order of the Wizards. They
are tracked by Gollum who is desperate to get his 'precious'
back from Frodo and they encounter Orcs, talking trees and a
giant spider called Shelob.
Considering the phenomenal success achieved by the Lord of
the Rings books and films, the London show had a lot to live
up against. Fortunately, The Lord of the Rings musical
at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane is no disappointment - with
a £12 million budget, this is the most expensive theatre
production ever staged in London theatre with astounding
special effects, costumes and props which utilises cutting
edge technology.
