Show Overview

The Phantom of the Opera, the classic musical production at Her Majesty's Theatre is set in 19th Century Paris in the Opera Garnier. The mysterious Phantom has been part of the Opera house underground system for many years, even getting a salary and a box for every performance. No one knows him or who he is.

He takes on a protégée, Christine Daae who is a member of the chorus but when the Phantom, who claims to be the Angel of Music, gives her vocal coaching (through the wall of her dressing room), she turns into an amazing singer. Christine has a childhood friend, Raoul and the Phantom becomes jealous of her relationship with him. The Phantom appears to Christine for the first time, wearing a mask to cover his disfigured features. He takes her to his dark world beneath the Opera house and only releases her 5 days later after she promises to return of her own free will. By this time she has removed his mask and has seen his deformity.

Raoul himself becomes jealous after hearing Christine speaking to the disembodied voice in her dressing room. She catches him spying on her and is angry but eventually tells him about the Phantom. They decide to run away, to leave Paris and the horror of the Phantom behind.

The Phantom of the Opera overhears their plans and on Christine's last night in Gounod's Faust, he kidnaps her. Raoul follows but ends up instead in a torture chamber where he hears the Phantom threatening Christine. She finally agrees to marry him.

When the Phantom removes his mask one last time, he is overwhelmed by  Christine's display of affection as she cries with him and kisses his forehead. Consumed by this display of warmth, he lets her and Raoul go and even gives them his blessing to marry. The Phantom dies just a few days later.
