Show Overview
The end of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and the wicked witch of the
West is dead. The scene shifts to years earlier where we
meet the green skinned Elphaba who is ridiculed throughout
her childhood because of her skin colour. At Shiz University
she shares a room with Galinda (later the good witch) and
they take a dislike to each other. Elphaba becomes a student
of Madame Morrible, the headmistress, who is instructing her
in sorcery.
Elphaba has been granted an audience with the Wizard of Oz
and is sent to the Emerald City. Having become friends with
Galinda, she takes her with her. They meet the Wizard and
Elphaba performs magic using an ancient book of spells ‘Grimmerie’
giving wings to monkeys. She finds out however that the
Wizard has no magic of his own and Elphaba and Galinda
escape taking with them the Grimmerie.
They find Madame Morrible declaring to all of Oz that
Elphaba is a wicked witch and she flees on a broomstick.
Several years pass and Elphaba is now known as the Wicked
Witch of the West. Galinda and Fiyero become engaged even
though Fiyero was in love with Elphaba. At the hands of
Madame Morrible, her sister is killed by Dorothy’s house and
Fiyero declares his love for her. In various twists and
turns, Elphaba uses magic to create the Tin Man and the
Scarecrow but all to the good.
The Wizard is revealed as Elphaba’s true father and he is
forced to leave by Galinda who becomes governor of Oz.
Despite Dorothy throwing water over Elphaba, she still lives
and is reunited with Fiyero and they leave Oz together but
not before the two witches are reunited in friendship.
